In the future, using SHR2, I will need to replace 3 of the 4TB drives before I get any extra storage capacity. I can change to SHR2 in which 2 drives are redundant but that is possible only when going from the initial 3 (or fewer drives) and then adding, in my case 2 drives. For example, I have two more 4 TB drives to install, but I think I will wait until the initial online backup completes itself in several weeks (!) before I mess with it. Cloud storage seems like the best long term solution for off-site backup. In the meantime, I got 10 TB external drive and will back up on that. I am now in the process of backing up with the Synology C2 service and that will take a long time! Easily a couple of months for the initial backup. My question is, what do you do for backing up the NAS? I find Backblaze too slow although I did not try the B2 service. Now I am backing up my two laptops and Mac Mini to the NAS with Time Machine and I will soon be backing up all of my photo files from the external drive to the NAS with Carbon Copy cloner. Currently it has 3 x 4 TB drives in a SHR1 array, so 8 TB of storage with 4 TB redundancy.
I decided to get a 5-bay Synology NAS, the 1019+. I am in a slow process of updating my gear. Not sure this is the proper forum, but nevertheless:
